Proposition 8

Banjo can't vote, so he has to express his position on Prop 8 in other ways.

(Note - questionably humorous/disrespectful stunt orchestrated by Tom, not Kate. So don't think less of her for it.)

While I may not wholly agree with the stunt, I do agree with the sentiment. One thing I hadn't considered until a recent conversation with some lesbian soccer teammates of mine is how hurtful it is for them and their families even to hear all the vile "Yes on 8" commercials and to have to see neighborhood signs that encourage legislation that strips them of basic rights the rest of us enjoy (their words, not mine). At any rate, here's hoping that this proposition will fail and that California can move forward as gracefully as Massachusetts has...

(As an aside, interesting blog reading on this exact topic here: http://newdoorknobs.wordpress.com/2008/10/21/whats-not-on-the-ballot-this-november/ )

Hooray, Banjo!

And I just finished Katie's new book (highly enjoyable), so this issue really stands out to me now.

My friend Ben did a Prop 8 commercial a few months ago. His hair is funny in it.

Wow - THIS is sort of crazy.

"Leaders of the campaign to outlaw same-sex marriage in California are warning businesses that have given money to the state's largest gay rights group they will be publicly identified as opponents of traditional unions unless they contribute to the gay marriage ban, too.

...

"Make a donation of a like amount to ProtectMarriage.com which will help us correct this error," reads the letter. "Were you to elect not to donate comparably, it would be a clear indication that you are in opposition to traditional marriage. ... The names of any companies and organizations that choose not to donate in like manner to ProtectMarriage.com but have given to Equality California will be published."

Sheesh! How can people not wrap their heads around this issue enough to realize it's not a "you're either with us or against us" issue?

Actually, I think the letter should have read: "Yarrrrrrgh! Surrender the booty or else! Wait- not the booty, that might be taken the wrong way. errr... ummm. Give us your money or else! Yarrrgh!"

Good stuff, Banjo. I can't believe those threats that you posted Tom--insane stuff.

Does anybody still read Maureen Dowd? As far as I can tell the same incoherent column has been repeated for about a decade. (Maybe I am just insensitive to "gender issues"?) Is this worth a regular editorial column in what purports to be the world’s greatest paper?

Oops. I put that in the wrong post. Sorry.
